British Museum

I was working in my garden when I received a call from my dearest friend Michael. Michael and I used to teach in our local school at Inverness. We both taught history in our country school. My wife Margerie came to the gardens with my phone and handed me over saying, “It’s Michael.” He was talking very loud and fast as he sounded a bit excited about something. After I interrupted saying, “Michael, Micahel, catch your breath, slow down a bit.” He told me that he received two tickets for the British Museum from his son, who works for the government. He told me that we were to leave in two days if we wanted to take the early flight to Stansted Airport in London.

It was on the 14th of May that I received a call from my friend and exactly two days after that we had to leave for the museum. My friend’s son also bought the ticket for the airline, his son always knew that his father and I were great lovers of history and enthusiasts as well. He wanted to treat his father with a trip/visit to the museum. Being the gentleman he is, let alone his father he bought the tickets for the two of us; that evening both of them came to my house and formally invited me to the trip to the museum. It was meant as a surprise for both of us, Michael and I. Michael is my childhood friend, we grew up together on a small estate at Inverness. Since our childhood, we have been inseparable. That is the reason why he bought the tickets for both of us.

All the necessary preparations have been made in advance. We agreed that we would leave early in the morning, on the 16th of May. I woke up with the dawn of light. Shortly after that, Michael came around the house. We were flying from Inverness Airport to Stansted Airport and from there we were to take a cab. We booked a cab from company, it was suggested to us by Michael’s son, Liam. He told us that he often uses their service whenever he is travelling by cab. He told us that he was happy and content with their service. company operates to and from the airport. After landing at the airport, we saw that a driver was already waiting for us with my nametag in his hand. We went up to him and introduced ourselves. He greeted us in a very friendly and cheerful manner. He asked for our bags, I handed over one of my suitcases to him; Michael was happy enough holding his luggage. After that, we went on with our trip.

The significance and history of The British Museum are very interesting. It was first established in 1753. It is 269 years old to date. It was the first public national museum in the world.

After driving around through the heavy traffic we finally arrived at the museum. The driver gave us our luggage and took his leave. We spent the whole day in the museum. The centre of attraction for me was The Great Court. It surrounds the Original Reading Room. The British Museum Reading Room was so beautiful and enormous from the inside. The interior of the room was splendid and grand with all of its showings. We had already registered through email, so I spent the better half of my evening studying the research and papers of the past. We are both admirers of John Keats. Michael and I read some of his works as well. The whole day was a memorable day in our lives. Starting from our house and then coming to the museum, it was filled with excitement and was a great opportunity of learning for us. I would remember the day all my life and cherish its memories for the years to come.
